9 Houseplants for Small Spaces
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) A Pothos is a classic houseplant that's not only easy to care for but also an excellent choice for small spaces. With its trailing vines, you can hang it from a shelf, put it on a windowsill, or let it cascade from a bookcase. It's low-maintenance, doesn't require much light, and helps purify the air in your space. Plus, it's incredibly easy to propagate, so you can share the love with friends!
Snake Plant (Sansevieria) Snake plants are another fantastic option for small spaces. They have a unique, upright growth habit that doesn't take up much horizontal space. With their striking, sword-like leaves, snake plants make a bold statement without occupying a large area. As a bonus, they are great air purifiers and can tolerate low light conditions, making them ideal for those dim corners in your home.
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) If you're looking for a houseplant that's both attractive and low-maintenance, look no further than the ZZ plant. This slow-growing plant has glossy, dark green leaves that add a touch of elegance to any room. It can tolerate low light and infrequent watering, making it an excellent choice for busy plant parents living in small spaces.
Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) Rubber plants are known for their large, glossy leaves and striking appearance. While they can grow quite tall, their growth can be controlled by pruning and selecting the right-sized pot. They can adapt to various lighting conditions, making them a versatile choice for small spaces. Rubber plants are excellent air purifiers, helping to remove toxins from the air.
Another benefit of Rubber Plants is that without pruning, they will almost always grow straight up. Just make sure when you purchase one, you get one with only one stem. Here is a picture of mine.
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) Spider plants are another classic option for small spaces. Their long, arching leaves create a beautiful, cascading effect, perfect for hanging baskets or elevated plant stands. They are easy to care for, can handle a range of lighting conditions, and are known for their air-purifying abilities. Plus, they produce "spiderettes" that you can easily propagate and share with friends :)
Air Plants (Tillandsia) Air plants are unique, versatile, and perfect for small spaces. They don't require soil, so you can get creative with how you display them. Mount them on driftwood, place them in glass terrariums, or even attach them to magnets for a quirky fridge display. These plants do require regular misting or soaking, but their minimal space requirements make them a fantastic option for tiny apartments.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) Peace lilies are beautiful, low-maintenance houseplants that thrive in small spaces. Their elegant, dark green leaves and stunning white flowers make them an attractive addition to any room. They can tolerate low light conditions and are excellent air purifiers, helping to remove toxins from the air. Keep in mind that peace lilies are toxic to pets, so be cautious if you have furry friends in your home.
Dwarf Umbrella Tree (Schefflera arboricola) The dwarf umbrella tree is a compact version of its larger cousin, making it an ideal choice for small spaces. Its attractive, glossy leaves fan out like an umbrella, adding a touch of tropical flair to your home. This plant is relatively low-maintenance, requiring moderate light and watering. Keep in mind that it's toxic to pets, so take precautions if you have furry friends sharing your space.
Succulents and cacti are low-maintenance, space-saving options for small apartments. There are too many varieties for me to list, but they come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing you to create a visually interesting display without taking up much space. These plants typically require bright light and well-draining soil. Since they store water in their leaves, succulents and cacti can go longer between watering sessions, making them ideal for busy plant parents.

This Week’s Happy Planter Submission
So this started as a tiny cutting from the mother plant (which has been very generous to me). It was the most purple of my various zebrina cuttings so I was a bit reluctant to part with it. But I recently sent her off to a new home. I'll miss it but she can go stand proud in someone else's collection now!
Thank you, @starlingspecks for sending in this beautiful plant picture! It’s very generous to share your cuttings. What a great way to spread the love of plants :)
That’s all for now!
